Why I Left My Job At Bloomberg For The Startup World

Two years ago I was knee deep in two major realizations — we needed a new home and we wanted a new community. I was pregnant with our third child and I understood that not only had our need for space changed, but so had our lifestyle. We wanted less frenetic visits to the park and more convenient dance classes for my little girls. We wanted a home and a town, but all we came across were sites that offered us listing after listing of specific houses without much guidance or personalization.

At that point in our own home buying process I realized that there was a space in the market to cater to the human needs of those looking to move into a new home. I also knew that I’d be the one to start it.

After going back to my full-time job at Bloomberg LP after maternity leave, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there had to be something better suited for the next generation of homebuyers. I didn’t want anyone, let alone my friends, to meander through the process the way we had. There are wins to spotting the perfect listings on a site, but it’s ultimately the context around that house that sells you on your dream home. I wanted the opportunity to offer this alternative to a bigger market than just the one that lived in my head, or in my own home.

Eventually I realized that I had to take the leap of faith away from the full-time job that had provided me with so much stability. Almost a year ago, I did just that — I left a job that no longer fit my dreams and I stepped into the startup world. Suburbit is the tangible product behind an Aha-moment that was both intrinsically personal and incredibly eye opening. On the site you’re constantly reminded that it’s not enough to settle for a community that meets none of your needs just because there’s a home that meets some of your needs within it. I was intentional in deciding that our starter quiz pairs you with 3 towns before it pairs you with any realtors or homes, because step one in any process is to ensure that you feel at home wherever your own house will be.

We all know what it is to outgrow our past life. I felt it deep in my bones when my old job was no longer right for me or when our city apartment no longer fit the family we were building. It took a lot of talking to myself about all the benefits of allowing scary, new changes to happen because it was, at first, incredibly easy to drown myself in the details and uncertainties and allow them to stop me from moving forward. Suburbit was my answer to that question all first-time homebuyers face: what do I do next?

Once you have the inkling to start searching? Take our quiz.

Once you have an idea of what town is the right fit for you? Get matched with one of our expert agents.

Once you found a town and house? Make it home.

My passion for helping others find the right home is aligned with my personal mission that we all should have a space where we feel we belong. When I first started my career I never anticipated leaving all of the safety of my corporate job to start my own business, but the more I sat with the idea, the more it was the only option that made sense for me. I want those buying a home for the first time to feel that same degree of certainty behind their decision. This is the only house for them because it’s already home in all the ways that matter.
